In a recent study, researchers found out kidney transplant success rates in which the kidneys of deceased donors who had or had not gone to dialysis.

In the previous study, researchers found that transplantation of kidneys obtained from expired donors who had undergone dialysis before donation had worse outcomes as compared to the transplantation of kidneys from matched donors with no history of dialysis before death.

Kidneys obtained for donation between 2010 and 2018 were from expired donors who had undergone dialysis before donation. The study included expired donors over the age of 16 who donated organs, had three serum creatinine measurements during hospitalization, and donated each kidney to a different patient.

Medical records used certain the donor underwent dialysis during the final hospitalization, the duration and mode of dialysis, and also for the reason for dialysis, that is, acute kidney injury, methanol intoxication, or due to medication.

We analyzed follow-up data on kidney recipients to examine short- and long-term results. We considered delayed graft function, which impacts hospitalization length, costs, and the risk of severe outcomes, as a key outcome.

Long-term results included GFR estimates at 6 and 12 months following the transplant, longitudinal decline in estimated GFRs, all-cause graft failure, and death.

Serum creatinine values used to calculate the estimated GFRs at six and 12 months from transplantation, as well as the longitudinal decline in these rates. Incidence rates and cumulative incidence were used to present all results. Analyses were also conducted based on dialysis modalities and duration.

Conclusions

The study indicates that kidney transplants from expired donors who had undergone dialysis due to minor kidney injury have an increased danger of delayed graft function. However, these kidney donations were not linked with long-term adverse results, such as graft failure or death.
